This past summer, Aneth traveled to Thailand where she engaged in community service while immersing herself in the language and culture of this unique land.
“This trip was the biggest moment of growth in my life, and I will never forget it. I gained so many skills that made me sure of success. It helped heal my social anxiety, gave me confidence in my leadership, and it made me further realize what I truly love.”
Mission & Vision
Too many students live in communities defined by historic inequities and have their ambitions stifled by disinvestment and lack of opportunities based on race, ethnicity, and other factors unrelated to their talents and aspirations.
Gabriel (far right) traveled to Australia this past summer to learn about wildlife conservation.
Farther Foundation enables students to break free from these constraints and experience the wider world through educational travel. Our students become immersed in new cultures, provide community service, cultivate leadership potential, and attain personal growth. Inspired by their experience, Farther Foundation alumni return home with new skills, confidence, and enthusiasm—ready to take on new challenges in school and in life.
Impact
Our scholars graduate high school at a 100% rate, they attend college at a 99% rate, and persist in college at an 88% rate.
Alumni spotlight
Many Farther Foundation alumni have finished their schooling and are making their way in the world in a variety of work and professions including health care, education, law, social welfare, business, technology, engineering, and the arts. Here are just two examples of our alumni making their mark on the world!
Jessica was part of our 2013 cohort when she participated in a program of cultural exploration and photography on Sioux Reservation land in South Dakota. Jessica went on to earn a degree in construction management from Wester Illinois University and was featured earlier this year in the Illinois Real Estate Journal highlighting Women in Construction Week.
Josh was referred to us by one of our partner organizations Evanston Scholars in 2017 and participated in a program at Boston University. He then earned his master’s degree in educational leadership from University of Illinois – Springfield and is now supporting students professionally as Campus Activities Coordinator at DePaul University and back at Evanston Scholars as its Mentor Coordinator.
