The HMI Summer Term unites wilderness expeditions, intentional community, and engaging place-based education in our unique setting of Leadville, Colorado. On two backcountry expeditions, students learn wilderness travel skills and develop personal connections to each other and to nature. While on HMI’s campus, students engage in a community of shared responsibility, resulting in friendships and memories that last a lifetime. Through field classes and engaging projects, students explore sense of place, leadership, and environmental ethics. At the end of 5 weeks, students leave HMI inspired by the natural world and ready to dive into their next year of high school with confidence and curiosity.
