We are beginning to see a light at the end of the Covid tunnel, and hope this portends a return to a robust array of student educational travel opportunities in 2022. Meanwhile, Farther Foundation adapted our program strategy in 2021 to help our students where they are.
Go Farther Alumni Scholarships 2021
Due to the pandemic, quality educational summer travel programs are in short supply in 2021, as is the demand from students. In high supply, unfortunately, is stress among students about how to get the most out of a remote or otherwise disrupted education — and how to pay for it. The barriers to success are many:
Non-conducive learning environments – either in isolation on-campus or remotely from home where the barrier could again be isolation, or noise, or poor internet, etc.
Loss of income from campus work-study programs.
The loss of library services and the need to instead purchase expensive textbooks.
The need to purchase or upgrade computers to engage in online learning.
The loss of campus-based support systems such as counseling, advising, and tutoring.
The loss of extra-curricular activities and clubs that add depth, breadth, and variety to learning.
Farther Foundation responded by offering scholarships to all of our program alumni who are currently enrolled in school. Over 100 students were awarded more than $40,000 in scholarships to help defray educational expenses.
Nathalia
“I am currently attending Denison University where I plan on double majoring in Biology and Global Health with a chemistry minor, and eventually attending medical school. This scholarship would allow me to buy textbooks this semester, afford on-campus meals, and assist with paying my federal student loans. My family has been experiencing a financial crisis due to being unemployed during the COVID-19 pandemic. This scholarship would greatly help with the stress this past year of managing schoolwork, while also with being employed in three jobs on campus. It is difficult to purchase school-related materials since my earnings from working on campus go directly to my family who needs the support because the head of my household is an unemployed single mother caring for two of my younger siblings. This scholarship is an opportunity to provide light in my life from the dark struggles of making ends meet.”

Welcome to our new board member
Farther Foundation welcomes Ed Cruickshank to our board of directors. Ed’s love of travel and appreciation for its value was born early in life through family and school trips. Ed is a fiduciary senior wealth manager living and working in Chicago’s north suburbs. He is also involved with The Night Ministry/The Crib supporting at risk youth and serves on the Board of Trustees at his church. We look forward to benefitting from his enthusiasm for our mission, his professional acumen, and his commitment to community service.

Photo raffle
In a non-Covid year, our students travel across the country and around the world to experience new people and cultures, and to discover the best in themselves. Afterwards, they participate in our annual photo contest. In a year with no student travelers, we have turned our attention to a group of wonderful photographers who support Farther Foundation and our mission.
Later this year, our photographer friends will each donate a photograph that we will enlarge, mount and raffle off to our supporters. Reflecting a year of lost travel, our photographic theme will be “Discoveries close to home”. We look forward to sharing these photographs with you later this year and hope you will join the raffle to support our scholarship program.
